My sister, JoAnne, had an extra concrete birdbath top and was kind enough to give it to me for my "critter watering hole". It looks much nicer and is wide enough and shallow enough for the birds to bath in. The squirrels were a bit leary of it, at first, but it didn't take long for them to figure it out. 
I dont worry about the neighborhood cats bothering the birds, with it so close to the ground.....the fence is my little dog's yard....and she doesnt like cats.
It does look nicer and roomier. It's a nice addition to your yard. I couldn't help but compare the foliage in your yard to mine--they are so very different!
