I spotted this Pileated Woodpecker working on a tall dead tree, just a ways back in the woods. I can see him from my back deck. This is not a great photo but my camera was zoomed as far as it would go. He is facing towards the camera with his head down. You are looking at the top.
I will keep watch of this tree. Perhaps it’s checking out a nesting area.
Or already has one. “Woody” and little “Woodys” ….wouldn’t that be something to watch?!!
The Pileated Woodpecker eats Carpenter Ants….and there are a lot of them running around here.
woodpeckers are so cool!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures of the Pileated, Carol... Hope you do get to see some little ones soon... Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteWe have Pileated around here --but I haven't seen one when I have my camera with me... I can sure hear them!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
What fun if you did find a nest! You must be keeping your ant population well down between the woodpecker and the armadillo. I really like the second photo. The dead tree is interesting, and the woodpecker adds a nice accent.
