Ebony Jewelwing Damselfly ( KY )

We took a quick trip to Kentucky, and on a walk up the creek that runs through my sister’s pasture, I spotted this Damselfly. It was beautiful! My sister and husband were enjoying the creek while I chased after insects. It gets addicting. I end up with 50+ shots of the same thing. Of course, most do not come out clear.z 062c

No matter how I tried…I couldn’t get the iridescent color right. It changed with the light. One minute it looked a vibrant blue…then green. z 119c

There were dozens of them flying around, but that was the only type I saw.z 058c

Even the colors of the plants as the sun and shadows changed them had an effect on the Damsel’s color.

I wish I had them cruising around my back yard.

  1. Beautiful colors! I like to try to photograph dragonflies, too.

  2. That second shot shows the green blue irredesence very well. Never seen them with such dark wings. Great captures.

  3. These are really lovely! I've spent a bit of time myself chasing dragonflies around my backyard and taking hundreds of shots, most of them just grass. They really are a challenge.

  4. They are simply exquisite! I think this is the same species as our "Beautiful Demoiselle"

  9. Great work, you are quite right--it is hard to fully capture their beauty with a camera.
