Weird looking insect. What is it?

Does anyone know what this little bugger is?

It’s about an inch and a half long. Didn’t seem able to navigate very well. The legs actually looked “fleshy”.  I’d sure like to know what it’s going to look like when it grows up.

Looks like a hard shell on it’s neck and small wings…though it never opened them. Maybe it’s something that just hatched. Appreciate any help.

  1. I believe it might be a cricket nymph. Not sure. Helen

  2. Very nice shots! Your mystery critter is a mole cricket. I'm not positive which species, but check out Tawny Mole Cricket, Scapteriscus vicinus.

  3. Wow, that is very cool. I'd guess it might be an Orthopteran (order of grasshoppers and crickets). If I find out anything more I'll let you know--or hopefully someone else will know!

  8. Nice shots of the Mole Cricket -- probably a Southern Mole Cricket, but I'm not certain. They are normally founder tunneling under grass.

  9. Very unusual looking with the Darth Vader cap. Amazing pattern on its back. Is that a tail like structure woven into whatever it's on? Sorry I don't know what it is, but you sure got great captures of it. Did you try BugGuide?
