Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Unless you look closely you might think this is the Palamedes, but it’s not. It is a Black Swallowtail.

027cs 061cs The one on the R is a Palamedes. See the striped body. The Black Swallowtail’s is spotted.057cs

I think this is the female. The male (?) followed her all over the yard…waiting for her to decide if she wanted to mate or not. At least, that is the way it looked to me.

They flutter so fast I was surprised when I saw I had them with both of their wings spread. 037cs

  1. What stunning butterflies Carol.
The third picture really captures its beauty, and the last, wow, excellent in flight shot.

  2. Wonderful captures, Carol! We're seeing the last of the butterflies up here. The weather is turning too chilly for them.

  7. Carol, I just came across your blog and was instantly hooked. I just sat here and read all the way back to your first post. I will be back often to visit the wildlife in your area. You have many of the same critters we do (I often write about our possums, raccoons, skunks, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds), but you have so many others that we don't have here! I can't imagine seeing armadillos or peacocks or eagles on a regular basis! Thanks for sharing so much of the beautiful wildlife of your area!!!... Donna @ An Enchanted Cottage
