Eastern Amberwing Dragonfly

I just posted a couple of pictures on www.riverwildlife.blogspot.com of dragonflies. We saw them in Silver Glen Springs.

While working on that blog entry, I saw a butterfly land on the bottlebrush bush. Grabbed my camera and headed out the door. It was gone…but I did see this small Dragonfly. I couldn’t find any info on it, so I have no name. It’s not much more than 1 1/2 inches long. It didn’t look like much. Just yellow wings but I took some pictures to see if I could get some clear close-ups. insect2 020cs

I couldn’t believe what I got with my little Kodak EasyShare z712 IS digital camera. I did nothing to this picture other than put my name on it.

This next photo I cropped a bit to bring it in closer.insect3 011cs

This is one of the first batches that I took and it had me hooked. The wings look like jewels or stained glass.Insect 028cs

Naturally it wanted to sit on the top of the hibiscus bush and I had my arms stretched as far as I could. I was surprised there were any clear ones, what with my arms shaking and the bush weaving in the breeze. When Jim got home I showed him this series….he suggested using a small stepladder…DUHH…I should have thought of that. That’s how I was able to get closer on the first two images, and the one below.

I have varied backgrounds. The sky and when facing the other way, the trees.

I think I am thoroughly hooked on Dragonflies.

  5. Dear Carol,
He is BEAUTIFUL! Sorry for shouting but I am so awed...fantastic photographs. You have the eye for the beauty that is all around us.
I looked in my Dragonfly through Binoculars book and I think you may have a male Eastern Amber Wing. So beautiful...Dragonflies and Damselflies are very wonderful bugs!

  13. Thank you for visiting my blog. Your pictures of the dragonfly are amazing, so clear and crisp. The face of the first one is very funny, it almost looks like a brooch than a real dragonfly. I have never seen them so close.

  15. Hi Carol – thanks for your comments. I believe I do the same that you do but instead of following the blogs on my dashboard my daughter showed me about to do it on Google Reader. I have about 37 blogs listed in there, yours included, and it tells me which ones have new posts – go to Google and on the top click on More, then Reader.

  19. Carol, your photography is AWESOME! What kind of lens does that camera have? I can never get that close or my lens is not that good for shots like these. I will be back to look some more!

  21. The camera is a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS. 12x optical zoom. They make another lens for it but I havn't decided to buy it yet. I did find that it wont focus on a really "busy" area. The dragonfly had nothing around it and the camera focus beautifully. If there is one blade of grass between you and the subject? it will focus on that or not at all. I have very little camera experience so this may be true of all cameras. No one is more shocked than I was when I downloaded them and saw what came out.

  25. Carol, what beautiful pictures! You were so lucky to get that little guy holding still. And he really does look like he's smiling! :)

I have the same problem with my digital SLR (Nikon D50) in macro. Sometimes I can't get it to focus at all. I'm sure I wouldn't have this problem if I didn't rely on the auto focus so much.
