White Ibis

I see these all around the Palm Tree farms. They don’t usually visit my yard, but here they are. One flew in, must have found something he liked and then several more showed up. I was able to snap a few pictures but as soon as I opened the door for a better view, they flew away.white birds 014cs

I don’t use any pesticides so it’s possible something hatched that they like. They use their bills to probe into the dirt or water for insects and frogs.white birds 010cs

The Ibis lined up on the tree limb were on the river.

Rush hour?  I still can’t believe a large flock of birds like this can take off all at once and not fly into each other. No lawyers or lawsuits?  I guess that must be it. Doesn’t pay to have “wing rage”.

  5. How fun to have them around. I love the perched picture especially. They look like unopened blooms on a flower spike.

  7. Carol. So glad you don't use pesticides -- not only because of the insects and frogs that the Ibis eat but also that you are not contaminating the water-table. Your photos are always so refreshing! -- Barbara

  8. What a good series of bird pictures. The last two are outstanding in their movements, one showing the birds are rest then… what a mêlée! Also I read your post on how to take pictures of birds from inside your home. We have 4 feeders outside close to the kitchen window, one is very close actually. The problem is that squirrels constantly come and eat the seeds. We bought those large saucers and placed them under the feeders but they climb on the pole and jump on the feeders. If I run outside they jump off but I would have to run outside every 10 minutes, so I have given up. There are also many chipmunks in the yard.

  9. Great post! Love the last photo where they're in flight. We have "White-faced" Ibis over at Bowdoin NWR, but I have never seen a White Ibis. They are just so pretty.

  10. Well, where I live (Illinois) we get an occasional migrant Ibis, none of which I have seen, but to have them in the yard would be incredible! Thanks for sharing...Wow!
